I'm sure you're here because you've seen a fair share of stunning drone videography online and you're wondering 'How do I do that?'

Well, it's quite simple! I'm going to outline the key steps for getting into drone videography and creating professional, cinematic and impactful drone videos.

Tip #1 - You Will Crash It...

Let's get this out the way first, flying a drone can go wrong and it often does. Whether it's human error or functionality, it is likely you will experience at least once, a situation where you sh*t yourself.

So, brush up on drone laws, regulations and how they work.

Tip #2 - Buy Second Hand

If you've never flown before, not even a friend, look into the second-hand market. MPB is a great site for second-hand kit and Facebook Marketplace is a goldmine for equipment that has often been barely used.

Tip #3 - The Right Model

If you know anything about drones, you might be aware that you'll likely be looking for one under 250g. Most people over the age of 18 can fly a drone that weighs under 250g and they can be operated in a lot of areas. Anything over this weight and you face more restrictions, regulations and training. Obviously, some heavier models will offer greater features, but you don't need to worry about this if you're just getting started.

You'll also likely have heard the name 'DJI Mini'. These drones are the perfect setup for beginners but also offer the capability to capture professional, high-quality footage that looks far from beginner.

The good thing about these drones is that because they're so popular they're very easy to pick up for cheap or second-hand because they're constantly being updated.

This is the perfect playing field to practice your skills.

Tip #4 - Basic Operation

To create drone footage that looks professional, the key is to master the operations. Luckily, they're very simple. Up, down, left, right, camera tilt - it's all very self-explanatory.

But to come across as professional/cinematic, you want to master how smoothly you can do these.

There's nothing more jarring than a drone clip that jolts or suddenly twists every so often.

So spend time practicing soft and steady motions with the joysticks!

Tip #5 - Signature Moves

Once you've mastered operation, it's a good idea to have a few signature moves up your sleeve. This might be overhead shots, slow spins, pan camera down as you tilt up - have fun with it! Once you've got some motions you're confident with, it will come across in your filmmaking.

Simple, right?

Drones are easily accessible nowadays and getting into it is really quite simple. But if you want to take it seriously as part of your job, practice, practice, practice. Then, when you're ready, upgrade your kit and get creative!
